How come in the rodent section?

esp with hamsters, people arent willing to take their pet to the vet

theyre are way too many people who do not deserve a pet because they wont take care of it

you dont see it in the dog section as much tho why is this? How come in the rodent section?
i do not know but i think they perceive them as disposable pets and it blanks me off.How come in the rodent section?
Im one of these who do take my small pets to the vet,and yeah i do agree many people feel less inclined to do it because they were a cheap pet to purchase, however its not acceptable and its inhumane to make any animal, small or large suffer.People with dogs spent a load of money so they're wanting to maintain the dogs quality of life more, especially since the dog wil be the animal that gets most attention in the house and also the dogs injuries are far more noticable. I spent 拢500 or more on my rabbit before it died,in operations and everything else and I would do it again anyday. When people purchase a small animal, people need to know its a big commitment but there isnt much information telling people about this.
Cheaper pets make people less inclined to spend money on them- I've heard people saying things like ';I'm not going to spend 50 euro on vet fees for a 5 euro hamster!'; and suchlike. People who have cheap pets and don't bond with them very well often think of the pet in terms of money like this when it comes to vets.

Dogs are more expensive and they're more traditionally regarded as a close pet or family member- even though people can love their rodents very much and some people don't care about their dogs, no-one says 'a rat is a man's best friend'. That part of it is just due to perception- they're a small pet that many people don't bother to bond with or to train, so they are sometimes seen as more disposable.

Then there are wild rats so people think rats don't really need vet care.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I do take my pet rats to the vet when needed - and pay the rather expensive vet bills.

The people who don't take the animals to the vet probably have reasons something like this:

- They don't consider their pet rodents to be worth the money, given that if it dies, they can buy a new one.

- Their parents don't want to spend money on a pet they got probably at least in part because they thought it would be cheap.

- They didn't realize that small animals get sick and cost a lot at the vet. It's really quite incredible how ignorant some people are.

What bothers me is when these people ask for veterinary advice and then get defensive when people tell them to take the animal to the vet. Idiots. If they can afford a computer and internet, they can damn well afford a vet if they make it a priority.
anyone who really knows the answer to that doesnt really want to say it. you know, as well as we all do, that creating a bond with something you have to keep in a cage for fear of it starting an infestation in your home, as well as its being a very inexpensive ';pet'; i call them food, is nearly impossible. they all have the same mentality and no REAL personality. some are nicer than others, some eat food out of your hand. none of them are worth spending 75 bucks just to see the vet when you can get another item of food for $4.99 at the local pet store.

Should the Hamster be Declared Our National Rodent?

Will you help me launch a campaign to declare the hamster our national rodent?Should the Hamster be Declared Our National Rodent?
I'll bring my cat over to eat your hamster, if he bothers you that much...Should the Hamster be Declared Our National Rodent?
GO HAMSTERS!!! HAMSTERS SHOULD BE OUR NATIONAL RODENT!!!!! GO HAMSTERS!!!
No. It needs to be the rat, so it will stand for our system of potlitics.
I think the guinea pig should be the national rodent, because a lot of people like guinea pigs more than hamsters.
I vote Rat for many reasons! Some political and some actually pertaining to the characteristics of the rat! I have never been bitten by a rat, and I have never held a hampster who hasnt tried to take a bite out of me!
No, I do not know what our national rodent should be. But it should not be a simple animal that people keep as pets. Our national rodent should be a wild animal, like a beaver.
no.......it should be the rat
I think that a rabbit would be a better choice.
I thought that title was reserved for a rat with intials GWB.
Would this be in substitution for our existing National Rodent (and, if so, what rodent currently serves as our NR), or would it instead anoint the hamster with an honor that no other rodent has heretofore enjoyed? Pretty exciting, if you ask me!
YES! ham-hams rock!!!! why did you think they made hamtaro? everyone luvs hamsters! they are sooo cute! rats are ugly, mice are cute, but hams beat them all!!!!!!!!!!! I know this is wierd but baby possums are cute too.......

Do rats get along with any other rodent besides other rats?

No, different rodents don't usually do well with rats. I have heard of people having their guinea pigs play with their rats, but that was really taking a risk. Rats will most likely get in fights with hamsters, mice, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, chins, and ferrets (though ferrets aren't rodents). And NEVER keep them in the same cage with a different species of rodent. They do best with other RAT friends.Do rats get along with any other rodent besides other rats?
No not at all! Rats are natural predators, and I have read that if you were to put another animal in with a rat there is a possibility that the rats instincts would kick in and it could kill it! I say don't risk it! I read this lady had a loose pet bird and the rats killed it and began to eat it, I don't know how rare this is!Do rats get along with any other rodent besides other rats?
No, it's not a good idea to mix rodent specices together.
Well I think you should keep your rat either with other rats or on its own...

Where in detroit can i buy ropel rodent repellant?

You can buy them online at:

What would you call a person who drowned an animal of any kind, rodent included?

Well, of the vertebrates, without having any other details, I would say that person was horribly, horribly, horribly cruel.

I'm not as fond of fire ants, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and flies... so where drowning those are concerned... I say, go for it.What would you call a person who drowned an animal of any kind, rodent included?
I would call them troubled and immature and possibly criminal. What would you call a person who drowned an animal of any kind, rodent included?
Psychopath
I'd say they were sick in the head
someone with priorities.

but I limit this to cats and rodents....dogs and other mammals are not included in my answer. I see NOTHING wrong with drowning a bag of rats.
I would call them guilty of criminal animal abuse, and I would report them to the police and to the humane society.

Many people who abuse, torture and kill people, especially children, started out abusing, torturing and killing helpless animals.
well i would say they arent animal luvers and i wouldnt trust them with a pet if u need to have someone watch ur pet dont let that person doo it 4 u cuz who knowes what will happen
Hmm..subspecies come to mind.......among others
daddy
psycho...why?

Is To-To (Swahili for baby) A Good Name For Any Pet Rodent?

Im getting a pet rodent, is the name To-To (it means baby in swahili) a good name for 1 of them? And is Aoyoma-Kun a good name for the 2nd pet rodent? Is To-To (Swahili for baby) A Good Name For Any Pet Rodent?
Yeah, if you like it. Your pet, your name.Is To-To (Swahili for baby) A Good Name For Any Pet Rodent?
Any name is okay for a pet but i recommend get an easy name like Tia, Jack, Josh (To-To is ok) but Aoyuma-kun is too long and ur rodent might not be able to learn his/her name fast. Probably never.

Hope I Have Helped!

Ok well im trying to figure out what type of rodent to get.? PLZ HELP SOON!?

I picked up a hamster but he bit me within the first minute. I dont think i was doing anything wrong. Kinda turned me off to them. BUT not totally if you can prove me wrong. I was wondering if mice are a good choice. PLZ HELP SOONOk well im trying to figure out what type of rodent to get.? PLZ HELP SOON!?
Well looks like RATS are a favorite here and I am going add one more for them I had a hairless female who was absolutely the sweetest thing. We took her to the lake and she was on my husbands shoulder she dove into the water and I almost paniced until she swam to me and climbed up on my shoulder. Amazing. She was so cute something about the no hair made her that way.

I rescued a teddy bear hamster once when I worked in a pet store a lady had bought it then took it home and discovered it was missing one foot on the front she brought it back and I took it home. He bit me twice once when he was in his ball he fell asleep and I reached in to put him back in his cage he let me know he didn't want to go in his home. The second I startled him when he was asleep. He used to run so fast on his wheel at night then you'd hear a thump of him getting tripped up because of his foot and getting thrown out but he kept doing it. He was sweet too.

Rodents are going to be that way if you spend enough time with them. My rat never bit I did have black hooded rats that did bite when I worked in the pet store. I seperated them from becoming pets. If you buy one from a pet store see if there is one that one of the workers is fond of on any hamsters, gerbals, rats etc... If there is then that is the one you will most likely want to buy because it is already acustom to being held.Ok well im trying to figure out what type of rodent to get.? PLZ HELP SOON!?
Mice are fantastic! i've had three...Fleur, Hermione and Stella. None of them have ever bit me, and they are very sweet to cuddle w/. they will even sit on my shoulder and let me feed them sunflower seeds! plus, most people who might be freaked out by rodents aren't scared of them due to their small size and sweet disposition - not like rats (so scary and gross!)--blech!
    Rats make wonderful pets.

You can research at Ratforum.com :D
All small rodents tend to be hit or miss. I've had really friendly hamsters who have never bit anyone, and I've had bad hamsters who bite whenever possible. All of them came from the same conditions. I'm personally a big fan of the guinea pig myself when it comes to rodents. I've found that they are more likley to be friendly and they live longer then hamsters. (haveing a pet live for only 2 years is hard) Check them out, theyre really sweet and cute. :)
    a husband?

I'm just kidding...sorry for the bad joke.

but i got two guinea pigs awhile back and they were really sweet pets. i had to get rid of them however because i was allergic and my eyes itched like crazy when they were house....ugh. but they were really good pets.
the unfortunate fact with rodents is that they are very hard to tame especially hamsters. there are a couple of things you need to remember. A hamster is nocturnal and when you pick it up you are disturbing it and it is bound to be grumpy. Hamsters are very cute but happen to be one of the more nippy rodents. The biting issue is a common issue in almost all rodents. I would pick up a rat though it may nip at first after a little work it will be perfect a bunny isn't that bad either. How ever almost all rodents can be tamed but some take much more work than others!!
    Been there done that.

    The Hamsters and gerbils bite.

The mice bite less, but they poop as the walk. It's like the truck that paints the dotted lines in the road, like they need to follow the poop trail back home like Hansel and Gretel.

Guinea Pigs are cute but we needed something smaller....

We got pet rats! They were so sweet and NEVER bit my sons, even though they were 4 and 6 years old and did not handle very gentle all the time. I got myself a cute little brown and white female baby for my 40th birthday. She was a wonderful ambassador for her much maligned species.
Hamsters don't do much...they are happy on their own and can be quite unfriendly, mice don't do anything really either but run around. I have two female rats, very sociable, they actually look forward to interacting with their owner and coming out to play and see the house. Mine were handled from babyhood, never have bit me or my kids, they will lick my hand if it smells like food though. They will run around on the couch when we watch tv, if they get frightened they run onto your shoulder and hide on me, they don't just run off like a mouse or hamster will and never come back. You can teach them to come to their name as well, they are extremely smart and contrary to what some say they do not carry disease, pet rats and sewer rats are not the same breed. Google pet rats and you will find a ton of information and stories and pictures of rat owners...my preference is the two females, the males do have a stronger musky pee smell from marking which the females do not do.
If you want someone to prove you wrong, that hamsters are a good pet, then I don't think you should get a pet, unless it is a fake one. Too many people just get a pet with out doing any research, reading about them, etc. Personally, I don't care for hamsters, but that is mainly because I like rodents to have tails. My sisters and best friends have syrian and dwarf hamsters and they love them. I have gerbils and love rats. It just depends. But if you get ';turned off'; just because one bit you, then you don't seem like a suitable pet owner.

I probably will get tons of thumbs down, but that is what I believe.

Too many people are ignorant with rodents and don't treat them as near as well as they should be treated.
    rats are awesome for pets.

they don't bite unless they are feeling very threatened. i had 12 rats at one time for a period of 7 yrs and the only time one bit me was when my female was getting ready to give birth and i didn't realize it.

when i went to take her out of her birthing box to clean it she bit me. that's the only time any of the rats ever bit and it didn't even break the skin.

rats are trainable, cuddly, playful, and they all have unique personalities.

they are easy to clean up after and eat anything in the house. they don't get smelly like mice and hamsters as long as you keep their cage clean and most love playing in water during bath time.

i wish you the best with whatever you decide on.
Rats are extremely affectionate and loyal. Their only downside is that they only live 2-2 1/2 years.
Mice are ok, and less likely to bite than hamsters or gerbils, but I would highly recommend a rat. They are intelligent, social, clean if housed properly, and the least likely to bite of any rodent. Just google ';pet rats'; to get tons of info!

I've had several when I wasn't able to have a dog, and they learned to come when called, did some tricks, and really enjoyed being handled and interacting with me.

Guinea pigs are docile too, but not nearly as smart as a rat.

    Good luck!

Can you keep rodent in an glass cage?

my bearded dragon just died and i was wondering if i could buy a chinchilla or some other kind of rodent and keep it in the same cageCan you keep rodent in an glass cage?
No, you should NEVER keep a chin in a glass tank .... there is not enough air flow and it can harm them on many levels.

A small rodent (rat, mice, hamster, gerbil) in an aquarium is OK, but NOT chins! Can you keep rodent in an glass cage?
Aquariums are not generally suitable habitats for rats as they allow for the buildup of ammonia, which can be quite harmful to a rat's sensitive respiratory systems. They can also chew at the silicone lining and make the habitat useless for other animals at a later date. It would be a much better idea to use a wire cage, as adequate ventilation is very important for rodents.

For more information on rats, please visit my website (link in profile) or feel free to email me by clicking the link in my profile. Good luck!
No you shouldn't put them in a tank because there's not enough air circulation. You should get him an open cage - like a cage MADE for rodents. They sell them at the pet stores. They can get sick easily then.
umm...they can but prefer bigger wire cages...

    1. space...wire cages tend to be a lot bigger...

    2. air circulation

    3. its a lot better...
Yes and No. It depends how big the cage is. If you wanted a chinchilla i wouldn't put it in it. If it were a bunny, hamster, gerbil ect. Then yes.
rodents have alot of ammonia in their urine and will smell really bad if the cage doesn't have adequate ventilation. Think of it this way. When you are in the bathroom and it smells bad... don't you open a window to allow ventilation?
um...you can keep small rodents in that kind of a cage. Rabbits, Hamsters, rats, etc...but I wouldn't keep a chinchilla in that cage. They're very active and need lots of space to climb and stuff.
i wouldn't generally recommend it, as glass cages don't get good ventilation, causing ammonia build up and respiratory infections...get a wire cage or another bearded dragon,is all i have to suggest

    ===EDIT===

regardless of the cage size, you still face the same problems
You absolutely should not keep a Chinchilla in an aquarium.

You could keep gerbils, hamsters, or mice in an aquarium. Rats require more ventilation than a tank can provide, so tanks aren't recommended housing for them.

40 gallons is pretty big. You could put a permanent divider down the middle, creating two 20 gallons. Then, have a hamster on each side. You could also have a same-sex pair of gerbils, one pair on each side. However, I recommend you do research before getting any pet you haven't had experience with before.
depending of the size of the cage, a chinchilla will probably need a fair amount of space. my hamster lives in a tank, but i have a special attachment to the top that adds as a second floor, and its wired. you need good ventilation because when they pee, it smells BAD!
i do not think that is a good idea becuase then they might be able to climb on there house and get out of the cage and get killed or hurt

What rodent is the funnest? Your opinion...?

Ok I am going to get a rodent like next year , so I still have a lot of time but which rodent is the funnest in your opinion... A hamsters, mouse, rat,or guinea pig. I had a hamster before she was really fun like she can go in a hamster ball and a hamster wheel, can other rodents that I named can do that? What rodent is the funnest? Your opinion...?
Rats are awesome. Not only can they run on wheels and go in very large ';hamster balls'; they are very intelligent and affectionate.

I have had many many rats over the years and greatly enjoyed every one of them. I had one that loved to climb on her cage upside down. I had another that would empty all the things he didn't want in his cage daily in his food dish because he knew I would take it out and change it every day. I had one (my favorite) that would chase the cat when she came out in her ball. Best of all each and every one of them loved to sit on my shoulders, cuddle and play.. they are awesome pets. I can't speak highly enough of them. What rodent is the funnest? Your opinion...?
    Rats
I think a bald ';beaver'; is the most fun ; )
I had a guinea pig for six and a half years. That's one of the advantages of guinea pigs, a relatively long life expectancy. They shouldn't be put in exercise balls. They aren't built for it and can sustain serious back injuries. But they like running around on the floor in a safe room (no electrical cords or other hazards).

Mice are intelligent, inquisitive, social little creatures. I've had them too. Some run in exercise balls, some never figure it out. I used the hamster sized ball, to leave room for the tail.

Rats are very sociable and form strong emotional bonds with cage-mates and human caretakers. They are bigger than mice and therefore more cuddly. You would think a bigger animal would smell worse, but rats actually smell less musky than mice. Of course keep the cage clean. A dirty cage stinks whoever is living in it. I bought a jumbo exercise balls for my rats, and they're afraid of it. I keep trying, but so far they won't go in willingly, and if placed inside, they don't go anywhere. They don't have a blast zooming all over the house like my hamster.

I think rats and mice are slightly more fun than hamsters, and on about the same level as guinea pigs. But I love them all.
Capybaras, they are the world's largest rodents!
just go to google and research rodents as pets, you can learn alot about them that way

I have had many hamsters, and have found them a rewarding pet, but im now getting a rat, because they are very smart, and playful, so id say a rat is the best rodent to have because they are very clean, smary, playful, can learn their names and do tricks. And since you like the hamster ball so much, you would prolly love taking a rat on a walk outside on a rat leash.
guinia pig.. they can go in balls to..
All other animals you mentioned can do but the mouse might not be able to use a ball because of it's size. Have you considered a Chinchilla or a hedgehog?
my favorite rodent pet is gerbils. i have 2 and in my opinion they are better than hamsters. they can go in a ball and have a wheel too.

here are 2 great sites about them:

    http://homepage.mac.com/kyleekay/care/pr鈥?/a>

    http://www.twinsqueaks.com/index.html
The guinea pig. I hate their little faces and their little cry.
A rat. they are very smart and usually live longer. Dumbos are my favorite. They are very comical. They can run on wheels and in large rodent balls.
I would say that hamsters are more fun.If you want a hamster that you can watch it be active, then I would suggest you get a robo dwarf hamster.I have 6 of them. They are so sweet. They would never bite. They are very small which makes them very cute. They can go in hamster balls and hamster wheels since they are very active. They are always fun to watch. You can go to http://sps.nus.edu.sg/~neesohye/dwarfrob鈥?/a> to find some photos of them.I really hope you get a robo dwarf hamster because they are very fun and a very kind pet.

    Good Luck!

I want a cute affectionate inexpensive rodent that wants to cuddle but I don't know what to get?

I have a chinchilla and she is so sweet and loving. They cost a little more than some rodents, but if you consider the fact they can live up to 15 to 20 years, you get more for your money.I want a cute affectionate inexpensive rodent that wants to cuddle but I don't know what to get?
No rodents really want to cuddle. I guess a chinchilla would be close enough, though. Their cages can be expensive.I want a cute affectionate inexpensive rodent that wants to cuddle but I don't know what to get?
i know this sounds gross but rats are the most affectionate rodents. i had a pet rat named mickey rat that used to sit on my shoulder all day (once in a while he would pee on me) which was gross but any rodent would do that if left out too long. they are very smart also. the only bad thing is they have a little odor to them no matter how clean you keep things. a miniature bunny is not much bigger than a rat and very affectionate as well
Rabbits. Rabbits really are rodents. If intorduced to humans at a young age, they love to cuddle.
I would have to agree that rats are affectionate. i had two of them one female and one male. my female was more affectionate but my male was a sweetheart too. they use to lay on my bed with me or sit on my shoulder as i walked around the house. they are very very smart though lol mine figured out how to get out of their cages! they are very inexpensive as well. i have had rats, gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, ferrets and Guinea pigs they are all great but if you want an animal to show effection and love to learn and play get a rat! you can teach them tricks too! good luck to you!
GUINEA PIGS!!!!!!!!! by far... I've never had a rat... but I've had mice and a rabbit... and out of all of them guinea pigs will love you the best and the longest. Their also easily trained, and do cute things like squeek when you open the frige door to get a carrot. = )
    a rat!

they're really clean and easy to take care of. i promise they are great pets, i have a rat myself, she's great. they like being handled and aren't afraid of humans.

make sure you read about them first because you don't want to do something wrong. they live for about 5 years if taken care of really well. and make sure you never give them cedar bedding, they'll die. they're the cleanest rodents because they're always cleaning themselves. they're kind of like little dogs. also, if you get one make sure you let it be in it's cage for a day or two so as not to frighten it away from you forever.

also, they're only about $10 or 15$, maybe cheaper. i highly reccomend getting one! :D
get a baby chipmunk i had oone their really cuddley and their free if you take it from out side ! but hamsters ((depending on which one you get )) are cuddle so when you go out to by one ask if it holdable and try to hold it
A male rat is the CUDDLIEST small animal I've ever owned. (Females prefer to explore than sit with you).

    I've owned:

    - Mice, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, guinea pigs %26amp; ferrets.

They aren't very expensive (unless you need a vet. I just spent $78 getting my male rat x-rayed for potential arthritis). How could you NOT think this face is 'cute'?

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v440/P鈥?/a>
i like female hammys males can be more agressive( only sometime the one i have right now is the cutest thing ever) and the females are more tidy.

    Merry Chritsmas!
a stuffed animal will suit your needs.
OMG! Guinea Pigs are the best pet you will ever find. They are so sweet and very low-maintenance!
    Gross. You need a boyfriend.

  • I want a pet for my birthday. Its a rodent my mom thinks they all stink, but do they?

Over the course of the past 30 years, we have had rodents galore! Some may strongly disagree, but the only ones that really stink up a room are hamsters! Don't know why, maybe their pee is stronger or something.

If you want a pet, try one of the feeder type mice at the pet shop. You'll need a tight screen top for the cage, as they escape very easily. The nice thing is that they don't bite, don't stink, and can be trained quite easily! The down side is that they also don't live very long, as compared to say, a rat.

Gerbils are ok, but keep in mind that they are nocturnal. So get used to thinking how cute they are while they sleep, and remove their wheel before you go to bed.

For the health of your rodent, please remember:

    keep the cage clean

keep the water and food fresh and plentiful

give them limited but regular fresh veggies!

That's all I got! Happy birthday, and enjoy your new pet!I want a pet for my birthday. Its a rodent my mom thinks they all stink, but do they?
Not really, I had one when I was little. Just keep it and the cage clean.I want a pet for my birthday. Its a rodent my mom thinks they all stink, but do they?
i used to have an albino dwarf hamster, and the only thing he smelled like was the cedar shavings i put at the bottom of his cage. as long as you keep it clean and replace the shavings often enough, it shouldn't smell.
you could get an African Soft Fured Rat. they are sweet, grow to the size of a gerbil, dont stink ( but no rodents stink if they are healthy and they have clean cages ) and they are vary loving. I own two females and i love them to death. Their names are Hadley and Amy. and they are the cutest, funniest, lovinest, non smelliest rodents i have ever had!
males stink females dont, its a bit like real humans (if you know what i mean) lol
no...not usually...it counts on your responsibility on KEEPING it clean...and if your mom still refuses even when you say that you'll be responsible...develop a point system...im doing that and every chore has a different value of points...the hardest ones with the most points...im doing this to get a rat right now...oh and say that you have to get 300 points for your mom to give you permission...and tell her that she doesnt have to clean it...and that you will...hope that helped!
only if u dont change ther cages for more thana week.promise.iv had 4 rats in my lifetime :D
ok see you have the same problem as me my dad said i can have one but i have to keep him outside! im going to tell him begg him to say yes to my room any ways its going to be my room i will clean it if it stinks
Only if you don't clean their cage.
    oh god yes.

but don't tell her that or she wont let you have one.
only if you keep the cage clean then it wont stink at all.

    goodluck!
They do if you don't clean their cage for more than 4 days
No. I recommend a gerbil. They are clean, very gentle, have no odor and fun to play with. They adapt well to be handled by humans as well.
The pet itself wont stink like how your mom thinks but it will smell a little like bedding.

It will start to smell if u don change the bedding often enough
gerbils arent supposed to stink, and theyre adorable :)
I clean my rats' cage once a week, and visitors say they can't smell a thing. They're surprised because they think rodents are supposed to stink too.
rodents are actuallu very clean. the only time you will have an odor is if you do not change the cage
Rats are the worst with smell. I would go with a Hamster or Guine Pig and just make sure you keep the cage clean
You know what, i thought so too until I bought a Guinea Pig, and he doesn't stink at all. I clean his cage about once a week, but that night before I clean his cage and it looks dirty enough... it doesn't really stink at all.

The thing is that I have a wire cage, and it's very open, so the smell doesn't build up. If you have a closed in tank (which I don't recommend for the health of the pet, anyway), you're really gonna smell it when you open the lid.

Just clean its cage once a week and you should be fine.
No so long as you keep there cages clean then they will never start to smell.
They don't have to. You just have to clean their cages regularly. I cleaned my hamster and mice cages once a week. I dumped the stuffing and food, rinsed and dryed the cgae, then put new stuffing in the cage. It doesn't take long to keep them clean.
ohhh mothers are alwyas saying stuff like that!!! No they do not stink!! but mice and sometimes rats do unless you clean there cage often! bunnies guinea pigs and gerbils are a great idea! But u gotta clean there cages every now and then and they want stink!! or maybe sudgest to your mum you can keep it outside in a hutch!! Rember mums are always trying to think of anything to say NO! lmao
Not as long as you dont keep the litter cleaned, I dont think it would stink too much.
ask for a dawrf ive had 4 and they don't smell
no they will if u dont clean thier cage often.

    (once every1-3 weeks).

How long can rodent bones (from an owl pellet) last in open air?

we just disected this owl pellet in class today, and i have a couple rodent skulls and a few bones..... How long will they last in open air.. or maybe even a ziplock baggie? How long can rodent bones (from an owl pellet) last in open air?
They will last quite a long time. you could use a zip lock bag, or alternativly you could laminate your findings onto a piece of paper. they will only start to bio-degrade in the right type of envoronment, eg, outside in the damp.

    Rabbit, squirrel, and rodent repellents?

I live in upstate NY. Do sent based rabbit and deer repellents work for both flower and vegetable gardens? When can I put them down? How long do they last and are they toxic to humans?

Have you had any experiances with them? Good or BadRabbit, squirrel, and rodent repellents?
I bought the kid of scent repellents that came in bags. You affix the bags to a stick and place around the garden. I can't guarantee that they work but I had no damage of my plants and I live right in the woods. They are not toxic to humans. They should be put out as soon as possible in the Spring because new shoots are coming up under the snow and it is often the shoots that they eat.Rabbit, squirrel, and rodent repellents?
The animal repellants work good for the deer, sometimes rabbits. Try using that and plant some Marigolds, rabbits hate the smell of them.

Do cats actually catch mice and or rats? If you've ever had a cat, has yours ever caught one of either rodent

Yes, my cat has caught multiple mice.Do cats actually catch mice and or rats? If you've ever had a cat, has yours ever caught one of either rodent
Yeah, I get snakes, lizards, mice, birds, and anything else you can think of on my porch and floor!Do cats actually catch mice and or rats? If you've ever had a cat, has yours ever caught one of either rodent
Pesonal experience, I have only see a cat catch a mouse or chipmunk when it was hurt. I have seen a dog however take out a mouse pretty fast.
some cats are natural mousers. in fact, we have a siamese who continues to bring in small rodents. oh.. and she also brings in the occasional earth worm!!
Yes. She caught a humongous rat in the garden...No more rats around after that. She also catches lizards, mice and sometimes, but rarely, birds.
Our old cat would catch mices, rats, snakes and birds and leave them right in the front door ... We would often open the front door everyday just to make sure there is no dead animals there since we leave the house thru the garage ... I wouldnt want any of our friends to stop by and freak out seeing a dead animal(s)

One time my dad saw a big fat rat that ran inside our house and he went to get our cat and left her in the den ... She caught it but wouldn't drop it til she went outside and dropped it in the front door ...
yea cats do that my cats would catch and leave them somewhere so we could see what they did its more of them leaving you a present to show how loyal they are
yes, i had 2 cats who both caught mice, but they first play with them, then kill them. They don't eat them actually because they are poisenous.
Cats catch all types of things. They even catch lizzards spiders roaches and frogs and little boys who want leave them alone
Yes, I had a cat that caught mice and birds... would leave them on the porch for us.
Yes they do and the cat will bring them to you as if it's a present!
yeah. like all cats have at least caught one mouse or rat.
    yes they do .

i had a cat that used to catch them and line them up on my sidewalk so i could see them,
yeah cats really catch rats and mice. Somewhere last week my dad and i went camping with our cat. I had a little walk around with my cat. The next minute he runs of and comes back with two rats in it's mouth!
Mine have never caught a rat but we have had lots of mice, voles and birds.

I know of a stable cat who regularly brings in rabbits and squirrels as well as rats, mice and only occasional birds - she is a serious hunter.

If you actually want a cat to catch mice you need a female - they're like lions in that, the males will do it for fun now and then, the females see it as their job.
In the winter, my cat keeps my house free of mice. She only leaves a small piece of the mouse to let us know she got one. We have found tails, ears, tuft of fur, kidney, and a foot. She eats the rest. GOOD KITTY! :-)

My dog also catches mice, birds, squirrels, rabbits, moles, voles, and she got an opossum!
well yes many times but i still love him. he brings be dead mice and rats. Well because he is an outdoor cat and i live right next to the farm. he also brings us dead squirls.
Cats love hunting small prey -- mine like to hunt anything smaller than themselves and they're excellent at catching them.
yes they do. my cat has numerous times, and not just mice but rabbits, moles, chipmunks, frogs, and birds.
yea mine has and left it on my bed to show me!
My cats catch Moles, voles, and birds.
Cats do catch rodents and birds and other prey animals. Most of the time when they play with a feather or a ball, a piece of string, they're actually (unconciously?) practicing for real prey. Their bodies still have memories of being wild and hunting for their own food and all.
Yes. they are brought to you as a present... My cat liked to catch chipmucks too. Now she is to old.
My outside cat caught mice all the time. I mostly see that cats that are live a good majority of their life indoors will catch and play with a mouse but do not know what to do with it after that.
Yes they do... in fact my neighbors cat was just playing with a mouse it had caught this morning.
Yes. My cats usually just catch and kill mice and birds and then bring it to me and leave it as a gift for me.
I had a cat that used to catch mice, moles, birds, and snakes, and bring them all into the house.
Of course! That's why farmers keep so many. They also kill weasels, possums, ferrets, rabbits, and other small animals. Cats will eat anything they can catch.
Yes, they sometimes bring them to the step to share with me...so kind! Other times, they bring it to the driveway and just leave the gross stuff behind.... ick!
Yeah they can catch mice, rats, chipmunks, squirrels even birds. My father-in-laws cats both constantly catch stuff outside, but not so much in the house. I don't know if they have mice or not though. They really don't catch them to eat but more to play. They just fling them in the air and catch them and do that over and over until they die. However last week Ozzy brought in a bird from the outside and it wasn't quite dead yet so that was interesting!!!!

If this rodent was White and he killed a black or Muzlim?

would this murder have been a race rage or race hate crime and would he have been treated as such? And the creature he calls his girlfriend charged with causing a race hate crime?http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1025855/Murder-checkout-Shopper-killed-Sainsburys-queue-jumping-row.htmlIf this rodent was White and he killed a black or Muzlim?
I think the media are sometimes acting irresponsibly to any chance of sensationalism to sell their papers. This guy was a big black bully ,probably off his head with crack. The creature who caused it all looked the typical chav scumbag shoplifter,an yes if this man had been white the papers would have made an issue out of it as racially motivatedIf this rodent was White and he killed a black or Muzlim?
If a white person kills a black or Asian person, it's usually labelled a racist crime whether it is or not. When it happens the other way round, the powers that be go out of their way to reject any claim that it may have been racially motivated.
I suspect the answer is no. I think the chavvy scumbag would have attacked regardless of the race of the person pushing in.

Lets hope the girlfriend gets a couple of years as well as the git who killed the poor sod.
Not unless he said ';YOU BLACK/MUSLIM ****'; and whack !

How do you get rid of dead rodent odor?

Which rodent is best for begginers?

I have been wanting to get one for a long time but I am not sure which one to get. I was really wanting to get a gerbil...are they easy to care for?Which rodent is best for begginers?
rats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Which rodent is best for begginers?
gerbils are easy to care for.....because other than cleaning, feeding, and giving them water you can't do anything with them. Gerbils also bite and aren't social, as are mice, and hamsters. If your ok with having a pet you observe rather than socialize with those are very easy to care for. If your looking for more hands on rats are a fantastic addition to families but they also require more time spent with them and a bit more care but I would also consider them less maintanance than lets say a rabbit, ferret, cat or dog.
Yes i've had 4 gerbils and i still have 3 of them! They are very easy to care for and very fun to watch. They don't produce much waste, mine have never gone to the bathroom on me in the 2 years i've had them. The only con about them is they are very hard to hold unless you get them from a very young age from a breeder. Apparently they don't trust very easily so if you want a cuddly pet then don't get a gerbil.

Also, they do best in pairs or more. And females are more territorial and more likely to declan than males. Mine are all males. They are very friendly and love to take treats from your hand!

Good luck, i hope i helped!
You should start off with mice, gerbils or hamsters. Try to avoid ones which need alot of care and attention, like rats who need a couple of hours with you each day. I'm not saying rats are bad and that you shouldn't get them, they are actually my favourite rodent but they just need a lot more space and time than others.

Mice are cute, and fun to watch but not the best to be handled for a long time. Males are more calm and laidback but they will also need taming. If you get female mice, get at least two.

Gerbils chew all the time, so you should invest on a stronger cage with no plastic tubes. People like to use glass tanks for their gerbils. They can also jump very high, so the tank should have a proper fitting lid.

Hamsters are known to bite randomly, but they can also be very sweet.

If you are only looking to get one pet, get a male mouse or a syrian hamster. If you dont mind having more, try gerbils, mice or dwarf hamsters.
I'd suggest a hamster, or maybe a gerbil for a beginner. They require the least care, an daren't as prone to illnesses as rats, guinea pigs and bunnies.

The only reason I'd suggest a hamster over a gerbil is because they aren't as quick, so it would be easier for you to handle it. They are both really fun pets, though, and I think it's more up to you than anything.

    Good luck!
I would suggest getting a hamster. They are easy care and fun to play with. I would either get a teddy bear hamster or some winter white dwarf hamsters. The teddy bears are so common and cute. I have two winter whites and they are also cute... they DO NOT BITE, all though an occasional small nibble. also they turn white in the winter so that is pretty cool. hope it helped!
    I'd say it'd depend on:

    - where you live (as in what rodents are available)

    - what is your lifestyle like? some rodents such as rats for example are extremely sociable and you do need to put aside time for them each day

    - what type of place do you live in and how much space do you have - luckily most rodents just need a cage with plenty of room and perhaps a room thats rodent-proof to free range in or an outdoor cage in the yard for rodents like guinea pigs or rabbits

    - i'd suggest researching groups or clubs on the particular rodent you are interested in and speaking to other owners for advice
Ever since I was little I have always wanted a pet and the one time when we went to the pet shop and I was begging my mum for a pet, to my suprise she said yeh! I had a choice of several rodents and I choose the rat! Even the pet shop lady said they were really good and fairly easy to look after! so RAT!!
gerbils are very easy to take care of! plus, they're desert rodents so they don't drink as much as say a hamster would.. which in turn leads to less urine.. which leads to less smell. i had my gerbil, ringo, in a 10 gallon aquarium with some fun things in there. he was a great pet!
You can take whatever you like just make sure they are freindly then they would be good for starters a Teddy Bear Hamster perhaps.
It depends what you want, I started with guinea-pigs and love them but winter white hamsters are also very good pets
yes they are- but you will need to buy two so they dont get lonely- they are very sociable.
I agree with miley if you get ones that aren't afraid of people and like people rats are definitely the best.....
syrian hamster.hamsters are fun and make you happy.
    get a guinea pig

    Is a bunny a rodent?

I was just wondering is a bunny a rodent? And if it's not what kind of animal is it.Is a bunny a rodent?
This is a common and understandlable mistake that many people make. Rabbits or bunnies are not rodents. They are actually in a Order called ';Lagamorpha';, which includes rabbits, hares, and a small South American animal called the pika. All rodents belong to an order called ';Rodentia';. One of the things that differentiates them is that Lagamorphs (animals in the Lagamorpha Order) from Rodents is the fact that they have an extra pair of small front teeth that sit behind the regular front teeth. Male rodents also have a penile bone, while Lagamorphs do no. Lagamorphs redigest special feces called ';cecotropes'; which allows them to get the most out of their plant-only diet (which is another difference, Lagamorphs do not naturally eat meat, many rodents do). There are other small skelatal features that distinguish the two groups, as well.

    http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/mammal/rode鈥?/a>Is a bunny a rodent?
No, rabbits (bunnies) and hares are not part of the order rodentia (rodents), they are part of the order Lagomorpha. Here is a link that explains why these animals are not part of rodentia: http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagomor鈥?/a>

    This is their scientific classification:

    Kingdom: Animalia (animal)

    Phylum: Chordata (has a spine)

    Class: Mammalia (mammal)

Order: Lagomorpha (this is the group that includes rabbits and hares, in a opposed to rodentia which is rodents like mice and rats and hamsters)

    Family: Leporidae

Genus %26amp;Species: this depends on the breed of your rabbit.
    No

Rabbits and hares were formerly classified in the order Rodentia (rodent) until 1912, when they were moved into a new order Lagomorpha.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leporidae

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit

Also for the poster above that said no they are mammals, rodents are mammals as well.

Mammals are animals that have a vertebrate, the presence of sweat glands, including sweat glands modified for milk production, and by the presence of hair, three middle ear bones used in hearing, and a neocortex region in the brain.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammal
Bunnies are mammals. To be specific, they are small mammals in the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha.

Rodents are also mammals, but consist of rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs.
    Nope! Rabbits are Lagomorphs!!!!

    They are not rodents!

(sorry if lagomorph is not spelt right I havent had to spell that word in a while and the spelling just went out my head when i needed it)
lagomorph - relative large gnawing animals; distinguished from rodents by having two pairs of upper incisors specialized for gnawing
The word Rodent is derived from a Latin word 'rodere' which means to knaw. Rabbits are rodents as their teeth continuously grow hence offering wooden things for them to chew on. Hope this helps x
Rabbits are not rodents. They are lagomorphs.
    No it's not it's a Lagomorph.

Thumbs downs from people who are fools mean nothing in the real world! You are wrong and thats an end to it
rabbits are mammals as are all rodents but rabbits are lagomorphs not rodents.
No bunnies arn't rodent, they are known as Lagomorphs.!!=)
it is a rodent but beleive it or not its more closely related to horses
Rabbits are Lagomorphs and related to animals such as a horse
yh it's a rodent 'coz it's teeth never stop growing
    No silly, bunnies are lagomorphs!!
its not a rodent but not sure what it is
    no they are lagamorphs
    No, it isn't.
a bunny is a mammel, is not a rodent, they make good pets if you have one as a pet. the wild ones can cause trouble coz they like to eat plants and flowers, but i never had any trouble with pet rabbits.
Yes a bunny is a rodent because of is size and how common it is, and no, it is not because they naw, dogs do that and they are not rodents, it is also something to do with their nature!
It is a rodent. Rondents are in the mammal family.
A rabbit is a rodent which is a mammal.
yes a rodent is an animal that has consistintly growing teeth
a bunny as in rabbit is a mammal more like the vole than ur rodent
yes they are and there really related to skunks, hamsters, etc.
yes it is rodent means naw and bunnys do that!
    no

    idk
ooh...i thought it was a mammal?

What is the largest rodent in the UK?

In July 2001 a capybara was reportedly sighted in Reading Berkshire but its smaller cousin the coypu now lives wild in the Norfolk broads.

European beavers have recently been released at the Martin Mere Wild Fowl Trust site in Burscough Lancashire.

Beavers are being released at a nature reserve in Lancashire after a 500-year absence from the county.

The animals, which are the world's second-largest rodent, will make their home at the Martin Mere wetland park.

The coypu was exterminated in Britain around 1989, allegedly!

The beaver is the second largest living rodent and is being re-introduced to the UK. The largest rodent is the capybara, obviously not native to the UK, however there have been unconfirmed sightings of one in the wild in Berwickshire, (see 2nd. link).

Our largest native rodent would be the hare, or possibly the enormous rat I see waddling up and down the field edge at the back of my house in Lincolnshire. He is so big and fat he can't even run!

What type of rodent should i get?

Hi, I am a busy teen boy and i want a rodent but idk which type I should get! i want a loving %26amp; devoted small animal that is low on cost, maintenance, and odor. Please give answers like rat, gerbil, hamster, guinea pig, or mice. please help!!!What type of rodent should i get?
I personally think Hamsters are the best =D!!

There not too expensive, the most expensive part is the cage, if you get a good one they can cost from 拢35.99+.

Hamsters near me don't cost very much.

The food is pretty cheap as well I get muesli.

    Then bedding is cheap again.

The toys, treats add onto stuff though. -you can also get them a little house to sleep in and even a toilet!!

Also you may want to consider getting them a play ball, so that when your cleaning out the cage it can go in there. (That's if you chose to get a hamster).

You can usually get good cage deals were it will come with a house, water bottle, food bowl, wheel and all that.

Syrian - Syrian are known to be better for first time handlers, because they're easier to tame, don't bite as much (sometimes don't bite at all =])!

Dwarfs - Are smaller and have a tends to bite more. I would recommend these for more experienced hamster owners.

    Hope I Helped!

[Hamsters rule! =D]What type of rodent should i get?
Gerbils have very little odour and can live much longer than hamsters and mice, they can also live in groups which make them more entertaining to watch!!! They don't make much mess so they are easy to clean and they can become very tame and friendly.
I've had all the rodents you could imagen and I will have to say I like mice every thing is cheper and I have today the baby ones are funny and they will not bite if you hold them and to get them from is petsmart because I've had rodents from other stores and they've died in a couple of weeks
Get a RAT! well rats last 1-2 year and maybe more and mine have never escaped their cages even when i leave the cage door partly open! and hamsters are hyper and too crazy sometimes and rats they can be sitting in your lap or on your shoulder and they just sit there and sniff you. you actually have time to know them and love them and mine never bit me once not once! you have to raise them right and it is soo cute when u give them food cuz they take it very gently and they are soo sweet!
hamsters r gr8! they are 5- 10 dollars at most pet stores, the cage costs 19- 39 dollars, and the food is normally 5- 8 dollars. these animals are good if you are busy because you only have to clean their cage 1 time a week and you have 2 feed them. they don't smell as long as you take care of the cage. they have 1 disadvantage:

they only live less then 5 years. their lifespan is normally about 2 years. I hope I helped you make a good choice and that you love ur pet.

p.s. you need to get a syrian(golden) hamster since you are probably a first-time owner.
Rats :) They are actually quite intelligent. they are much like dogs. they play, do tricks, love, are loyal, and their tails arent that bad. its actaully pretty fuzzy, it doesnt feel like snakeskin. I have 2 and they are beautiful girls. if u have any doubts just go to here http://OneMillionrats.weebly.com its my website.

also rats dont cost that much. i only spent 80 dollars on my 2 girls. most people say, for your rat to be happy, u need to pay 200 dollars. it aint true. look into this cage http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js鈥?/a> my girls love it and its very cheap for its size. it can hold 2 full grown rats. good luck! :)
Rats are relatively low maintenance, and are very intelligent and easy to train. However, their lifespans aren't too long, so if you want something that will last longer, don't go with a rat or mouse.
do never get a mouse or rat i hade them in my life alls thay do is find ways to Escape out of thar cages.etc..

get a dwarf rabbit thay rock and are so cute!!!!

whan my mouse/rat escaped everyday and got in the walls it was the worst!!!!!!=(

good luck with ur new pet

    =)
You could get a rat but they don't live very long. If you want an animal that lives longer you could try a guinea pig.

  • How would a PETA member with a rodent infested house get rid of those little harmless(ha!) creatures?

They wouldn't. They would try to lure them out with cheese and other things that rodents like and try to make pets out of them. Meanwhile driving away any friends and family who used to visit regularly. How would a PETA member with a rodent infested house get rid of those little harmless(ha!) creatures?
I'm a PETA member and I use a live trap then I let it go outside away from my house. How would a PETA member with a rodent infested house get rid of those little harmless(ha!) creatures?
There are traps where the mice just go into a little cage. You could then release the mice from the cage far, far away from your house.

Also, consider what you have in your house that could be attracting them. Look at what they have been eating and seal it up in plastic containers, etc. Then see if you can block their entry routes to the house.
wow...what a good question. You've really got me thinking about this one. Maybe they would use live traps and then release them into the wild. Maybe they would move. Maybe they would get cats from the shelter, let the cats eat the mice (because that is natual) and then let all the cats with big belly's go free.
They'd probably use a live trap.
im in PeTA and i use humane traps to take care of them. it gets rid of them with out harming them

by humane, i mean live traps
I don't know where you can find them, I used to have a few, but they are called ';tip traps';. They are angled on the bottom, so that when the rodent enters to get the bait, the trap tips due to the weight change on one end, and closes the door on the other end, trapping the mouse. Then you can go release wherever you like.
    They don't!
i think there are traps that keep the rodent alive so you can transport them outside. try looking for something like that. (i'm a PETA member as well).
Get rodent traps that dont hurt the animal. Then take them to a nice country like place where they will be able to stay.
They probably cuddle and kiss the nasty little bastards.

I wonder if PETA love insects too...

    Ultra sound rodent repellents?

Does anyone know if these repellents work? I have been told that they do, but the people who have told me say that they haven't had mice in their house since they fitted them, but how do they know that it was a result of the repellents, as it could just be that mice didn't come into their house. The ads for these repellents state that they do not effect household pets, however, if they emit a high freqency sound that rodents hear I do not understand how dogs and cats are not effected by this soundUltra sound rodent repellents?
It sounds like these types of repellents are not worth the money. Here are two quotes from the link below:

';Ultrasonic pest repelling devices have repeatedly been shown to be completely useless.” University of Florida

“Ultrasonic treatment devices (such as ultrasonic flea collars) claimed to rid homes of pests are completely ineffective.” University of North Dakota

Save your money for some traps or a cat.Ultra sound rodent repellents?
Save your money - they are abosolutely useless. I had a couple and I still got a mice problem. My friend's cat was completely unaffected during the time I looked after it.
I bought one for a house i lived at but the loft stayed infested with mice. Guess they don't work
    I have one.

It does'nt have any effect on our dog or other peoples dog's that come to the house.

Not sure if it got rid of the mice as we used other methods at the same time as we had a big mouse problem due to local building work.
Mine works well.It also keeps away moths and spiders etc.
I bought 3 of these when we bought our house. Truthfully, I don't think it has done much of anything. We have tons of moths and spiders and a mouse here and there. But it has not bothered our pets as far as I can tell.

The best remedy against rodents is a cat! But it needs to be inside, otherwise it defeats the purpose.

    Good Luck.

Thanks so much and God bless you! What rodent/bird could go in this cage (pic!)?
Nononono. The Cage is not right for birds. It would also be disastrous for a rodent.

    When Buying a Cage...

You want to look for wire cages that are chrome, powder coated, stainless steel, or PVC coated.

You cannot use a cage with plain galvanized wire. The zinc in the uncoated bars is toxic for your rats as they chew on them, and their urine will corrode it.

If you find that perfect cage but it's galvanized, or if you want to make your own cage out of galvanized chicken wire, you can have it powder coated yourself. Look in the phone book under metal finishers, and see if you can find one that is willing to powder coat it for you.

The bar spacing of the cage MUST be 1/2'; or less. Any wider and your rats could squeeze right through the bars and escape. Most ferret and rabbit cages aren't appropriate for this reason.

You don't need to stick to just the ';rat'; section when looking for your cage. You also have a chance of finding a suitable rat cage in cages normally meant for; birds, chinchilla, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, and even some ferret and rabbit cages can work.

Be sure that if you buy a cage with a door that doesn't latch securely, such as a bird cage, that you buy a metal clip or use wire to keep it tightly closed. Rats can be very smart about opening things.

You will also want to make sure that a bird cage doesn't have any other obvious exits, such as slide out dishes and trays. A rat could push these out and escape, so they need to be somehow secured before use.

Try to avoid cages that have wire floors. These floors are HIGHLY uncomfortable for your rats to walk on. Rats do not have fur padding on the bottom of their feet like rabbits do for protection.

Also, under debate, is that wire floors cause bumblefoot. Bumblefoot is the development of painful sores on the bottom of your rat's feet.

There are many solutions to fixing a cage which has wire floors. If the floor itself has a wire cover to it, simply remove it, with wire cutters if necessary. If the cage also has additional levels made out of wire, you can cover them with something solid. Effective things you can use include linoleum, plexi glass, ceramic tiles, and plastic sewing mesh

(same goes for mice.)What rodent/bird could go in this cage (pic!)?
Martins cages are great. The person who said ';bunny'; doesn't ahve a clue what she's talking about.

That is rat or ferret cage, but commonly used for rats. It might end up being slightly too small for a ferret. But I have one for my rats just like that, it's great.
no way a bunny, perfect for a degu or rat. though degus and rats should be in groups, this cage looks good for possibly 3 degus or rats. both great pets. also maybe one chinchilla.
Fancy Rats would love that! They're sweet hearts as well and act just like dogs, umm birds? Not soo much it's too crowded because of the leveling. So yeah Rats are your best bet, bunnies? not so much they get too big, and hamsters are too small
I think it would be great for a ferret as long as it had some ';out'; time. My closest friends have a ferret, his cage is slightly smaller than that I'd say, but the let him out everyday.
The wire floor is bad for all small animals/rodents so put some wood boards or cardboard on top. Once the wire floor is covered you could house a pair of rats, a chinchilla or a (maybe) rabbit. What are the dimensions?
That's a nice one! I'd say just about any rodent or bird. =]
I have one that is 2 levels and I would say a bunny.

What is a great apartment building IN Los Angeles that is cheap and RODENT FREE!?

I'm moving to Los Angeles and want to know of a great place to live that is cheap but most of all I can not do rats or mice. Help. What is a great apartment building IN Los Angeles that is cheap and RODENT FREE!?
You should be more specific about location. Los Angeles is kind of big.

I don't think rodents are generally a problem in LA, but you can check. What is a great apartment building IN Los Angeles that is cheap and RODENT FREE!?
There are lots of great places but they are not cheap. If you do want cheap then you can look around for a room for rent.

Try: www.recycler.com It was listings that you can search for free for rentals. As far as rats go, its usually not a problem unless you go to the worst areas. You can call a local realtor to find an apartment for you and they should know the areas.
';Great,'; ';L.A.'; and ';Cheap'; don't go together.
Not very many.... it really depends on the area

you want to live in within LA.

Which rodent pet is more amicable/friendly?

Hamsters, guinea pigs, or ferrets?Which rodent pet is more amicable/friendly?
I can't beleive none of you caught on to the fact that ferrets ARE NOT rodents. The eat rodents. They are carnivores not omnivores. They have canines too.Which rodent pet is more amicable/friendly?
out of the three you said, ferrets ( i had a ferret myself, she was really sweet)

But if your open for more options i would say a rat is best, also, if the tail creeps you out, i belive you can but them generically tail-less.
Ferrets are good- but nothings better then rat. Very clean, intelligent, and even trainable!! They are also very friendly- even when they are scared, it is a rare occurance for a rat to bite.
I've seen ferrets actually come when called and they don't need to be caged most of the day.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a>
Out of those, A well trained Hammie, or a well trained ferret
guinea pigs but rats are the friendlest
None of the above....Rats are the friendliest.
    I would say a hamster.

The population growth of a certain rodent is approximately 3% per month.?

Find the time it takes for the population to triple.

Thank You!!!The population growth of a certain rodent is approximately 3% per month.?
    in general about 37 months

The thing to realize is that, to find the population in the next month, we multiply the previous month population by 1.03. For example, if we started with 100, in the next month we have 100+100*3% = 100 + 100*0.03 = 100*(1+0.03) = 100*1.03. That amounts to 103. In the month after that, we would do the exact same thing, and end up muliplying by 1.03 to get to the next month. So, if we start with x rodents, after n months we have,

    x*1.03*1.03*1.03*......n times

    =x*(1.03)^n

We want the population to triple, or to reach 3*x (3 times what you started with). Thus, we want,

    x*(1.03)^n = 3*x

    Solve it...

    x*(1.03)^n - 3*x = 0

    x * [(1.03)^n - 3] = 0

So, we have two options. If x =0, then we win right away. We start with zero rodents from day 1, and 0*3 = 0, so we have already reached 3 times as many rodents!!!

    The other option is that

    (1.03)^n - 3 = 0

    (1.03)^n = 3

    Take ln of both sides...

    n*ln1.03 = ln3

    n = ln3/ln(1.03)

    or

    n = about 37 months.

So after about 37 months it triples. The population growth of a certain rodent is approximately 3% per month.?
    37.17 months

    P(t) =Po (1.03)^t , where t is in months and P is population

exponential growth with a constant growth rate of 3% and initial population is Po

    3 = (1.03)^t for tripling

    ln 3 = t ln 1.03

    t = ln 3 / ln 1.03 = 37.17 months

I know that the 2nd largest rodent is the beaver. Me and my dad just wondering what the 1st largest rodent in the world is i think it lives in south america if that helps

Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris. What is the first largest rodent?
The capybara, Hydrochoerus Hydrochaeris, is a semi-aquatic rodent of South America. It weighs about a hundred pounds, and is about 2 feet tall at the shoulder. It is the world's largest rodent.

I have a dead rodent in the wall of my house;House is circa 1880's,tearing down walls not an option...HELP!

Smell is not real bad but it is there; only happened recently with the hotter weather. I have seen answers saying it will go away and others saying it will get worse...HELP!! I cannot afford to tear down the wall. Even if I knew just where the thing was located.I have a dead rodent in the wall of my house;House is circa 1880's,tearing down walls not an option...HELP!
The corpse will eventually dry out or be eaten by insects and the smell will go away.

In the meantime use air freshener or burn insense.I have a dead rodent in the wall of my house;House is circa 1880's,tearing down walls not an option...HELP!
it will go away. the corpse will turn to dust eventually. go into the woods, can you usmell death, no because animals die and are broken down by other animals and bacteria. believe me, it will go away.
Can you make a small hole above the rodent and spray some lime in? It will stop shortly in any case but isn't comfortable.
The smell is getting out through some holes in the wall, that the dinosaur used them. Try find all access ways into the wall. Spray polyurethane inside. Be advised it will expand. If you have no experience using it, you will probably spray too much and some will get out of the wall and ruin your carpet or whatever it touches. Ask at the store for substances to clean it.

    Good luck.
We have an old house too and when we first bought this house we listened to ';creatures'; running through our walls. If this is an upstairs room, you might have access down the walls from the attic. This is going to take a lot of perseverance on your part to even find the stinky thing. If it is in a downstairs wall, if it is totally disgusting to you, you will probably have to tear out a wall. It will go away, no matter what people might say. We have torn down wall and found many a little skeleton in them. (no humans, thank God.)
You could call an exterminator to get an opinion, not to come out and take care of the situation. I bet they have been asked this alot!
It may get worse but will be gone after a while. I would not tear out all the walls unless you knew exactly where it was.
Well, if it was me........I would have a good cry first. (I hate HATE mice).

I know how awful that smell is. Are you for certain it is a rodent? Keep in mind that it could be something else.....squirrel or something. However, you know your house and the area best. It probably is a mouse, but I've heard of horror stories.

I think that if you can get through the odor, it will eventually go away as the mouse decomposes.

An exterminator might be able to give you some helpful hints. I would be worried about more mice. Usually where there is 1, there are many more.

He might be able to come out and do some preventative work so that you don't get any more. It would be easy if you had a crawl space underneath the house. ??

Best of luck to you. I would have a nervous crack up, but you sound like you are handling it like a champ!

Incidentally, I think the smell might get worse before it gets better. Hang in there and pray it's just one bast**d.
If you will not tear the wall open, you must wait. The smell will end after a couple months. Any dead animal will dry out and turn into mumified dust eventually.

NOT A PET ROCK!WHat is the easiest rodent to care for?
a rock isnt a rodent... nor is a weasel

they are all pretty similar really - fresh food and water every day, and clean out once a week.

rats need lots of attention, and guinea pigs, chinchillas and degus need lots and lots of space.

rats, mice, degus, gerbils and guinea pigs all do much better in groups or pairs

hamsters are the most commonly kept rodent. they dont need to be kept in groups, they syrians are particularly friendly, and since they are so common, there are now loads and loads of things to make taking care of them easier.

    i'll say a syrian hamster.

even so, they still need all the care you can give to them :)WHat is the easiest rodent to care for?
I think that rats or mice would be the easiest, also guinne pigs.

Rats do need a lot of stimulation, but they also crave human attention and can be litter box trained. This really helps with cage clean-up!

Daily needs: food, water, human attention, litter box cleaned out, something to chew on.

Mice don't need a whole lot of space. I used to breed them and kept them in a 10 gallon aquarium with out any problems, although many many people will tell you that aquariums are not good for them. They are *cute* but don't really care to be handled like rats do.

Daily needs: food, water, cage cleaned out once a week, something to chew on. Mice really need a wheel to be happy.

Guinne pigs need a lot of ground space, and unlike mice and rats need timothy hay as well. They are sweet but can be a lot more timid and scared than rats or mice. They make more intersting noises, though, and will definetly sqeak when they are hungry.

Daily needs: food (including hay), water, cage cleaned out once a week, something to chew on.

I think those are definetly the three easist to care for. Hamsters are easy but in my opinon are something you watch and don't handle. Most hamsters in my experiance are meanies and will bite, and some are so tiny and fragile.

    Hope this helps!
    Weasel!!!!!

What type of rodent should i get ?!?

Ok any where from a ferret to a hamsterWhat type of rodent should i get ?!?
ok.. first.. :-D !!! rodents are incredibl;y lovable, curious pets and you will have lots of fun. now here's a list of what i reccomend:

a Syrian Hamster: they are the larger ones, usually called teddy bears, black bears, long/short hairs, goldens, fancys, and/or winter white. they are the simplest pet to care for, and happen to be my favorite. they must be kept alone.

some dwarf hamsters: i actually don't like them that much. i'm sorry to those who like them, but they are too bitey and hyper-active. they don't enjoybeing handled much, and you should have at least 2 (of the same sex)

a ferret: i have never owned one before. so i dunno. they look adorable though :-)

a rat: very cute, rarely bite, and are trainable. they are only a little bit more difficult to care for than a hamster, and can be trained to sit, come when called, and a few other tricks.

guinea pigs: its best to get 2. i used to own a breeding pair, and more recnetly had a pair of shleter-adoptees. from what i remember, they are ok alone, and pairs are good too (again, same sex, though i recommend girl and girl, less of a chance of a fight)

a chinchilla: cute lil guys and girls. but the live 15-20 years, so prepare for a long-term commitment. i recommend a shelter here, though be careful if you get a girl. my sweetie, Persephone, was pregnant. she had twins :-) back to the subject, these are the most difficult. they will need once-a-week dust baths (which are super ridiculous to watch... :-) ) and once-a-week outing. its best if you allow them to hop around in a room for at least 30 minutes, keep an eye on them though, they can slide trough ridiculously small cracks. What type of rodent should i get ?!?
Get a syrian hamster there cute loveable and soft they are so cute when they eat and you can feed them lettuce and fruits they also look cute when they're sleeping aside from being cute they have a curious nature but are starteled easialy and pause for a couple of seconds i've also heard you can teach them tricks there lovable and worth the 100 $
    RATS!! :D

-They are smart and are the smartest rodents (except for maybe squirrels)

    -They are the sweetest

-They have personalities! (unlike hamsters and such!)

-They are low matenence if they have a friend with them

    -Their hands are the cutest!

-They have a bad reputation, so i am simpathetic for them

-They are so interesting to watch

-I have had Hamsters, Gerbils, Guinea pigs, Ferrits, Bunnys, lizards, Mice, Chinchillas, cats, dogs, and a groundhog. and BY FAR the rats are the best!

    -They can learn tricks!

-They love human companions (';To the world we are one, to rats we are the world';- world rat day)

-They can learn your routine and can wait for you infront of their cage door

    -They are not expensive

    -They are very unique!

Rats are great because 45 minutes with them is a fine amount of attention! I am 14 year old girl with a very paced schedual and it works out just fine. Especialy if they have a buddy!!

Good luck! I hope i helped! Please check out my website on rats! If you join, you can post pictures, ask questions, and get info about rats! rattysource.webs.com
oh my gosh! i saw this question and just had to answer well i just got two guinea pigs and they are so awsome! they are very smart and nice.i know that you might be thinking about getting a hamster but i say no to that because they are known to bite! i had one once and it always bit me! but guinea pigs are known not to bite ever unless you really realy tick them off! they are the sweetest things especially when they are with another guinea pig!
well id consider a ferret they are funny playful and sweet but they are expensive stinky and contain lots of care and patience

    id get a rat

they are sweet smart affectionate and fun they love to lick not bite and sit on ur shoulder when u walk

but u need to get a big cage since they need lots of space. and u need to get 2 if ur gone all day cuz they get real attached to their owner and if ur gone theyll get lonely and they r very sociable

depends on how much time patience and money u have!

    good luck

    hope i helped :)
    I Love rats!

Im getting two for christmas! Im so excited!

    You should get some too.

There really beautiful and socail creatures.

But if you do decide to get some amke sure you do your research first.

Iv been researching about rats for over a month and i still am until i get them.

Because i want them to live happy and healthy lives.

    EEEEEE i cant wait!
i like guinea pigs, and rabbits. ferrets smell, though they are cute. rats can be trained... but i would still pick a guinea pig if i were you.
a guinea pig there fun , loving , cute , and just so..... cute
RAT! They are the most social and friendliest and least stinky of all rodents!
I'm fond of Guinea Pigs myself! They're super cute and sweet!

This is the cage that I have, it's the Habitrail Mini system, designed for Dwarf Hamsters and Mice. Anything bigger than that, and they could get stuck in the smaller spaces, so be careful! (but they do make other systems in different colors that has larger tubes). This cage is awesome, and you can attach as many cages together as you want, and buy all different shapes and sizes of tubes and add-on spaces to create trails everywhere. Plus each system that they make can all be connected together.

What are your views on taking a rodent to the vet?

Do you think it is a waste of money, or the proper thing to do

Me and my dad are having this fight about my hamster, who has a lump and needs to go to a vet, he thinks it is a complete waste of money, and thinks i should save my money for something more important...while I think that is something important to spend my money on, money is replaceable, pets arn't and i think its really selfish to save your money for things instead of the well being of a pet, while he thinks its really stupid to spend $100 on a $10 animal

What are your views on taking a rodent to the vet

I put this question in this section instead of the pet section, because i know all those people will say take it to the vetWhat are your views on taking a rodent to the vet?
I had taken my hamster to the vet several times, and thought it was worth it. Tell your dad ';The hamster may have cost $10 at the pet store, but if the value of something is in the initial price, then the original Mona Lisa would only cost about $15, allowing for inflation.'; or...

';The cost to deliver a baby at a hospital is about $3,000 to $5,000. Does that mean you should never pay more than $3,000 to $5,000 to save my life?';What are your views on taking a rodent to the vet?
I get the same answer for my pet wolverine.
If you realy like that hamster and you think it's worth the money, then take it to the vet.
I have had many rats, and a few mice. I took most of them to the vet, at some point. I care for living things, so to me, it was worth it...
Anthony speaks words of wisdom. Take it to the vet.

My niece had a white rat named Princess, she had her for a long time and unfortunately she passed away of old age.She was a very good pet, although people got freaked out knowing she had a rat as a pet.
seriously? see if you can find a nice rat like a hooded rat maybe

as rodents go, they really are the best pets

Cat foods are marketed to people, not cats. Realistically, there would be very few consumers willing to purchase a product made from mice. Also, there is very little meat to be garnered from a mouse. The sheer number of mice that would be required to produce packaged food in any quantity would be impractical. Commercially packaged food is also regulated for health and safety purposes. The mice would have to be farm raised and tested for disease, etc. before they could be packaged. Wild rodents wouldn't be used, so this would not actually serve to control any wild populations. Lastly, cats actually prefer the flavor of other meats such as chicken. Feral cats eat mice as a means of survival. The mice are a ready source for protein and are easily hunted/killed. Domestic cats that are pets will catch mice only out of instinct to hunt. They often do not eat the mice, but rather hunt and kill them, play with them a little while and leave them. If you were to place both a mouse carcas and chicken in front of either a feral or domestic cat, they would most likely go for the chicken to eat.
I'm going to hazard a guess that cat food is commercially made from meat that is already available from other processes. It would not be economical to obtain mice. To cats that are mousers, the souce of food is already free.
lol. that is so funny. i never thought about that before. thats a good question. i think its so that the cats will like to catch the mice more. i dont reallt know that one!
Some animals don't like the taste of everything we would like them to eat or just lick, that why we keep putting all that peanut butter on our Pepys
I want to know who tasted the hedgehog to determine the flavour!
Scrumpy is right, have you ever noticed how when a cat kills a mouse or a bed and then leaves it at your bedside?
one of my daughters actually suggested this to a cat food company but they did not answer
cats catch to play with their prey not necessarily to eat it

Small rodent owners how often do you clean your cages?

small rodent owners how often do you clean your cages I recently got my son two hamsters and I clean the cage once a week in a 50/50 bleach solution followed by a lengthy clean water rinse and towel dry and within about a day it starts to smell like urine again should I be cleaning it every day its a hamster trail Deluxe and has many components perhaps I need a different cage that doesn't have so many small nooks for bacteria and what not to thrive?Small rodent owners how often do you clean your cages?
I clean my cage once a week as well. I have a large three story ';All Living Things'; brand cage like this one:

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js鈥?/a> I find that cleaning once a week is more than sufficient. I sometimes can even go for two weeks without cleaning, and his cage usually smells fine!

However, it seems that I have slightly different cleaning methods than you. I have a wire cage with two trays (one that slides out). I take the trays off from the cage and I wash these. The way that I wash is I dump out all of the old bedding and food. I then take the trays into the backyard and hose them down. After this, I scrub down the trays with DISH SOAP (this works very well). I usually use a large brush to spread around the soap and clean the trays and then a toothbrush to scrub the harder-to-reach areas. I also use an old, small, blunt knife to scratch off anything that doesn't come off with the brushes.

After washing both trays, I take out the wire part of the cage and hose it down. Usually soap isn't necessary for this part. I paper-towel dry the separate parts of the cage dry. I then wash my hamster's toys, food dish, and water bottle in the sink with dish soap and hot water. After this, I put bedding into the cage, set it all up, and put in my hamster!

I am guessing that the cage you have is something like this:

    http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js鈥?/a>

For this cage, I would recommend taking out the second story and the top of the cage from the bottom section (if possible and not too much of a hassle) and then washing it out like I described. If this is hard to do, I would just recommend dumping out the old bedding and opening up the cage and cleaning it as well as you can.

These are also a great products to use:

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js鈥?/a> (a spray that you can use to clean your cage)

    http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js鈥?/a> (a deodorizer)

If you still have odor control issues with your hamster between cleanings, I would recommend just quickly dumping out his bedding and spraying down his cage with these products between cleanings!

I hope this helped, and good luck!

Which rodent would fit a 10 gallon tank?

What kind of pet would be healthy in a 10 gallon tank, (NOT FISH). I want something I can play with and I was thinking of a hamster. Is there any others like rats or mice?Which rodent would fit a 10 gallon tank?
A rat, hamsters bite and are boring. If you don't have a fear of them I would go for a rat, they are really smart, most don't bite, they can play for a long time, they fit perfectly in a 10gallon tank, and if you get the right kind they can dangle by the tale like a opossum.. it's so funny!Which rodent would fit a 10 gallon tank?
Almost any......if they dont have to move....at all
Because rats need to go in pairs they can NOT fit in that small of a set up. It is cruel and inhumane. They want to climb and run and explore. They are active and require large cages.

A hamster might be okay. Get a dwarf hamster. Don't just toss it in the tank though. Get off your butt and be creative by adding some sort of shelves to climb on and places to hid in, etc.
I'd go for mice, because their small and don't really bite, maybe a hamster would be good too.

What is the relevance of rodent data to human health?

why do we use ';rats'; to test everythingWhat is the relevance of rodent data to human health?
Because they're readily available and they're mammals. Lots of rodent data is NOT applicable to humans, but science has to start somewhere. Once the rodent data is in, the data can ba analyzed and if it's promising an experiment using a human model can be designed. What is the relevance of rodent data to human health?
rats are used because they are plentiful, breed quickly and successfully, and no one feels bad about experimenting on them, as they have those icky tails. You don't see experiements on squirrels, because their fluffy little tails endear them to humans.
Because rats are (believe it or not) mammals that are so similar to humans anatomically that 99% of drugs that effective on rats will be effective on humans, too. There are always exceptions, but they are very rare indeed.
i dont know, what good is a rat for
we use rats because they do not belong to unions, they do not talk back and they work for crumbs
