Are there any health and safety regulations for a rodent cage, specifically a gerbil cage?

There's a debate in the gerbil community over this. Also there's a debate over what type of bedding is best.

Some owners opt for metal cages but those are bad because:

1. Gerbils are especially prone to respiratory infections. Any type of draft is bad. In the wild they burrow underground.

2. The cage is more difficult to clean and sanitize. Gerbils like to bite the bars and could get sick from a cleanser you've used or sick from an area that didn't get clean enough.

Other owners opt for glass aquarium tanks for the opposite reasons. I have always used aquarium tanks. Bedding is important for health reasons. Regardless of the kind you choose always change the bedding/litter at least twice a week. Again, respiratory problems from living in unsantitary conditions for a week is unhealthy.

If you have young gerbs then you're probably going to need a wire lid to cover the tank. They can jump! And no metal wheels with spokes please. Long tails and long slender feet tend to slip though the bars and get caught. What if you aren't home to help? :(Are there any health and safety regulations for a rodent cage, specifically a gerbil cage?
You'll want at least a 3 square foot cage, with a deep plastic base and metal wires around it that are approximately .5 inches apart. If it has levels, make sure they aren't made out of wire grids because they can get ulcers on their paws from the metal. If their are grids, cover them up with 2 layers of newspaper or paper towels. If I were getting gerbils, I would get an aquarium, not a regular cage. This is because their long tails can be ripped of if caught in the bars of the cage. My friends had 2 gerbils, and they lived happily in their aquarium.
Dont get a gigantic cage thay dont need something that big. and make sure the bars are small enough that the animal can't get out.
The bars shouldn't be too big so they can get out.

HEY It is true they can slip out!!! Why did someone put thumbs down??
you could ask in any pet shop that stocks gerbils/rodents.
