Cat foods are marketed to people, not cats. Realistically, there would be very few consumers willing to purchase a product made from mice. Also, there is very little meat to be garnered from a mouse. The sheer number of mice that would be required to produce packaged food in any quantity would be impractical. Commercially packaged food is also regulated for health and safety purposes. The mice would have to be farm raised and tested for disease, etc. before they could be packaged. Wild rodents wouldn't be used, so this would not actually serve to control any wild populations. Lastly, cats actually prefer the flavor of other meats such as chicken. Feral cats eat mice as a means of survival. The mice are a ready source for protein and are easily hunted/killed. Domestic cats that are pets will catch mice only out of instinct to hunt. They often do not eat the mice, but rather hunt and kill them, play with them a little while and leave them. If you were to place both a mouse carcas and chicken in front of either a feral or domestic cat, they would most likely go for the chicken to eat.
I'm going to hazard a guess that cat food is commercially made from meat that is already available from other processes. It would not be economical to obtain mice. To cats that are mousers, the souce of food is already free.
lol. that is so funny. i never thought about that before. thats a good question. i think its so that the cats will like to catch the mice more. i dont reallt know that one!
Some animals don't like the taste of everything we would like them to eat or just lick, that why we keep putting all that peanut butter on our Pepys
I want to know who tasted the hedgehog to determine the flavour!
Scrumpy is right, have you ever noticed how when a cat kills a mouse or a bed and then leaves it at your bedside?
one of my daughters actually suggested this to a cat food company but they did not answer
cats catch to play with their prey not necessarily to eat it
