If a small rodent has a cut that could be infected should you put TCP on it?

My gerbil damaged her tail about a month ago in a fight, and I just realised it hasn't properly healed, when she got her tail wet and i wiped it and some dead fur came off.If a small rodent has a cut that could be infected should you put TCP on it?
hi

i have been keeping small animals for 25 years now and the golden rule for cleaning injuries is plain cooled boiled water.

it not only cleans the wound it allows you to see how bad the wound is.

i would personally take the gerbil to the vet because of the time ago it hurt itself just to make sure the injury is not worse than first thought. it may also need a course of antibiotics if it is infected and you can only get them from the vet.

i hope this helps a bitIf a small rodent has a cut that could be infected should you put TCP on it?
best to go to the vet, she may well lose her tail and the vet will have to decide that.
get some hibiscrub from a chemist and clean the wound to make sure there is no necrosis of the actaul tail[rather than the skin]

if no necrosis present then bathe three times a day with cool boiled water with salt added until healed

you could also try bathing with collodial silver, i have seen good results with this

IF NECROSIS IS PRESENT PLEASE TAKE TO VET IMMEDIATELY AS PART AMPUTATION MAY BE NECESSARY
I would use Povidone Iodine (Betadine) from your local drug store. Dilute it with water until it is color of weak tea. I'd dab it on 2 times a day. It is safe for cuts even around their mouths so I'm sure it'd be fine around their tail.
use saline water is safer. do it twice a day
I wouldnt put tcp on a small animal like a gerbil. You should try salted water or even go to the chemist and buy sterile water ( like nurses use on wounds ).

The tail might fall off so think about taking your baby to the vet.. he/she might need some antibiotic solution/medicine.

Good luck honey
Yes ! I have used T.C.P.on both Rabbits Cavies, and birds,it does not sting and is none poisonous, but if you are worried take it to the vet,it's tale could be so damaged that the injured part falls off, this is common in rodents.
if you go to the vets, (you don't need to see the vet) and get some wound powder and use this it should clear up pretty quickly
well i dont know much on animals but i advise too not put tcp there genes are way diffrent than ours it may be harmful to them i advise to go and ask a vet or u could wait and see if its healed :D
absolutely not
this kind of injury needs to be seen by a vet especially after this length of time do not use any chemicals on it. use cool boiled water with a teaspoon of salt mixed in dry the affected area and aply some teatree ointment suitable for small pets from a pet store. but after this length of time the gerbil will lose part of the tail it won't affect him/her in any way. but needs to see a vet.
shave the area, bathe it put a water proof plaster on so it dosnt get wee in the wound. poor love.
As pet owners, we all know how to love and take care of them, but when they are ill or hurt themselves no matter how trival it seems I really do think its best to seek a vets opinion. I would be scared that if we adviced you to use TCP your mouse could then lick his tail and have a reaction to the TCP. It has not healed properly so may have an infection, your vet may well be able to give your gerbil an injection of antibiotics to clear it up.
I use sudocrem on my mouse, and it hasn't done him any harm. Apply a very very small amount using a cotton bud, ensure that it's nowhere near the eyes/mouth and that wherever you put it, there is no chance of the animal getting some on his/her paws then into the mouth...If it doesn't clear up in a few days though, or it seems like she is suffering then best to get her to the vets!

Hope she is better soon!
Get another.
