What are some smart rodent companions?

I really want a smart, small pet that I can take almost anywhere with me, but I'm not sure what I should get it. I'm thinking a ferret would be almost PERFECT but my mom says that there is no way of me ever getting one. Does anyone have some easy, semi-cheap ideas (below $200)? Don't get me wrong, all suggestions are welcome, but if they're over that, it probably won't happen. What are some smart rodent companions?

Gerbils are little einsteins and are very friendly when trained and handled patiently. Plus they cost under ten dollars each.

Guinea pigs are fun too and cost about $40-50
rats are very smart
rats are really smart and i have found less destructive than ferrets and can actually be left by themselves.
Gerbils are great!

-They can live in pairs

-they are energetic

-very smart (smarter than hamsters)

-Most are friendly

-they cost about $7 each

Good luck with whatever decision you choose!
Rats are the best!!!!! I have 3 of them but if you are wanting one you can take with you every where then I would not suggest it LOL. There are a lot of places pets are not welcome. Sugar Gliders are a small pocket pet which can be carried under your shirt in a pouch. No one will see them and they are a one person owner type of pet can pick you out of a room of 50 people if you train them right but I found it hard to find them and their food because they eat a special diet. I take my rats to the park but with the weather getting cold they have not been outside. They also go with me when I go to the pet store. They are a lot of fun and I love having them Would trade them for anything else. Best if bought in pairs. Same sex of course
ferrets are not rodents, for the record. they are carnivores

chinchillas are super smart, walk well on leashed. because they are so smart, they need lots of attention, they'll remember if you ever hurt them. so maybe not great as a first pet.

rats are very smart too, and if you get 2 cagemates they won't get as bored. though i'm thinking if your mom didnt like ferrets rats wont be much higher on her list. tho i can assure you they are smart friendly and very clear. they really never bite unless you really deserve it.

cost-wise you could get any if those from a Shelter for 10-50$, plus cage supplies and food extra. once you get a pet remember to keep a budget for vet care, food and toys, and emergencies!

good luck
Rats are smart you can train do what ever and very very lovable
